Regular Exercise Works Out to Relief from Lower Back Pain

Has lower back pain become a real pain for you? You’re not alone. Around 80% of people in the Western world will experience a bout of distressing, disruptive lower back pain at some time in their lives. But according to a new scientific review of back pain prevention published in the JAMA Internal Medicine, maintaining a regular routine of exercises for lower back pain can help sufferers avoid a relapse.

The Pain and Strain of Lower Back Pain

The first time most people experience back pain, it subsides in about one week. Yet others endure frequent bouts of back pain that interrupt their daily lives. In fact, experts estimate that 75% of people who have suffered one debilitating bout of lower back pain will experience another in less than a year.

What causes this crippling pain? There appear to be a variety of reasons lower back pain can develop. Yet in most cases, the cause of the pain is unknown. In general, the most common causes of lower back pain are:

  • Lifestyle
  • Genetics
  • Poor ergonomics
  • Sports injury
  • Slip and fall
  • Accident

In Active Pursuit of Research

In an effort to find a means of back pain prevention, researchers affiliated with the George Institute for Global Health at the University of Sydney and other institutions collected 6,000 back pain prevention studies before narrowing their focus down to the 23 scientifically strongest studies. In total, these studies examined more than 30,000 people with back pain.

For the review, the researchers looked at a number of back-pain prevention techniques, such as shoe orthotics, back belts, education about lifestyle changes, different types of lower back pain exercises, and programs that included both exercises for lower back pain and education about back pain prevention.

The Results of a Regular Routine of Lower Back Pain Exercises

After analyzing all of the studies, the researchers found that exercise programs both with and without educational aspects were most effective at preventing lower back pain. In fact, the combination of back pain exercises and preventative education resulted in almost half the number of back pain episodes over the next year. Interestingly, the type of exercises didn’t matter, as long as they were done on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, many people found that their back pain returned after that year, which was probably because they had stopped their exercises for lower back pain.

If you suffer from frequent bouts of back pain, the best way to prevent the pain and strain is to perform some form of back pain exercises on a regular basis. However, before you embark on an exercise program, consult your physician. Of course, if you are experiencing severe, worsening, unrelieved or unusual pain or other symptoms, such as chest pain or heart issues, you should see a physician immediately.
